Nihongo Machine User Guide
Part 1: Flash Card Mode The first thing you do with the Nihongo Machine is Load a Word List. (See the Loading a List section of the User Guide for details on this simple procedure.) The Word Lists contain all of the study material. Each list has 50 target vocabulary words and each word has six different peices of study material. The Flash Card Screen is the main study screen in the Nihongo Machine. From this screen you can view the study material as a series of virtual word cards. You can go through a Word List from front to back or back to front. You can view the front only or the front and back of the virtual card. You can view the Word List manually or have the Nihongo Machine cycle through the list automatically. With the Word List Summary Display, you can view a summary of the loaded Word List and jump directly to the card you want to see. From the Flash Card screen you can also access the Flash Card Mode Preferences to customize the way you study. Below is a reduced-size screen shot with labels for each feature found on the Flash Card Mode screen. Details about each feature are below the picture.
Title Bar - The name of the program, the name of the company, and the program name in Hiragana. Front/Back Indicator - The concept of a flashcard is that the front of the card shows the question and the back has the answer. With the Nihongo Machine, you can include the data from any of the 6 fields to be on the front and back of each 'card'. This indicator lets you know if you are looking at the front or back of the card. Kanji Field - This field displays the Japanese word/phrase and uses Kanji. Hiragana Field - This field displays the Japanese word/phrase and uses Hiragana or Katakana. English Meaning - This field displays the English meaning of the Japanese word/phrase. Variable Field - Depending on the word list being viewed, this field will show different things. For example, in the Verbs lists it shows the Japanese word/phrase and uses Kanji and the kana suffix has been removed. This is useful when taking some versions of a multiple choice test. Japanese Sentence - A sample sentence of the Japanese word/phrase. English Sentence - The English Translation of the above Japanese sample sentence. Flash Card Mode / Test Mode Selector Buttons - There are 2 main sections in the Nihongo Machine; the Flash Card section and the Test section. Click on these buttons to switch between the 2 sections. Word List Title / Card Number Indicator - This field shows the name of the word list that is currently being used. Each list contains 50 words, the number of the current word within the sequence of 50 is also displayed. Word List Summary Display - This field shows a summary of all of the words in the list. The words can be viewed as a list of Kanji, Hiragana and English. For example, you can view a summary of all of the Kanji in a word list. You can click on an item on the list to jump to that card on the screen. Previous Card / Next Card Buttons - Displays the previous or next card in the word list. Load Word List Button - Click on this button to open and view a word list. Preferences Button - Click on this button to go to the Preferences page.
