Nihongo Machine User Guide

After each test, this Test Summary screen is displayed. Here you can see the questions and answers that were in the test. You can see how long it took you to take the test as well as the average amount of time it took you for each question. As you use the Nihongo Machine, you should pay attention to these times and work at making these numbers as low as possible. To become proficient at understanding/reading Japanese, you must be able to know the meaning of Japanese words/characters/phrases almost as fast as you see them.

An interesting feature of the Nihongo Machine is that it measures the amount of time you spend on each question and counts the number of mistakes you make. On this screen, you can see which questions were answered incorrectly (and the number of attempts it took to choose the correct answer) and you can also see which questions required more time on average to answer. The latter feature is useful for determining which questions were most difficult even if a high or perfect score was achieved.

Title Bar - The name of the program, the name of the company, and the program name in Hiragana.

Flash Card Mode / Test Mode Selector Buttons - There are 2 main sections in the Nihongo Machine; the Flash Card section and the Test section. Click on these buttons to switch between the 2 sections.

Question/Answer Summary Display - This screen shows the questions that were used in the test, and their answers. Click on the 'Show Questions' and 'Show Answers' buttons to view them.

Column 1: Question Numbers - The number of each question.

Column 2: Response Time - The amount of time, in seconds, required to answer that question correctly.

Column 3: Slower Than Average Warning - If the amount of time spent answering a question is longer than the average, a marker is displayed in this column.

Column 4: Incorrect Response Counter - The number of incorrect responses for each question are displayed in this column.

Mistake Counter - The total number of mistakes in the most recent test.

Average Question Time - The average amount of time required to answer each question correctly.

Elapsed Time - The total amount of time required to answer all of the questions correctly.

Show Questions Button - Click on this button to display the questions that were used in the most recent test.

Show Answers Button - Click on this button to display the answers to the questions asked in the most recent test.
